Class, COVID-19, and cultural occupations

The publication of the latest DCMS Economic Estimates on Employment during 2019 paints a positive picture by suggesting the number of jobs in the cultural sector has grown by 24.0%. The cultural sector includes areas such as the arts, film and tv, and museums. Whilst the figures give some indication of overall workforce demographics, they don’t give a sense of the longstanding issues of inequality in the cultural sector. These inequalities are especially important in context of the crisis caused by COVID-19. Currently there are clear indications of the scale of the COVID19’s impact in personal narratives, organisational reflections, and also research responses.
