To ease the economic impact of the measures taken to contain the coronavirus outbreak, the European Commission presented a recovery plan on 13 May, 2020. As outlined in this plan, the coming months represent an opportunity: as restrictions are slowly being lifted and borders opened, tourism should hopefully be able to resume and allow Europeans some well-needed leisure and respite. In this spirit, the European Commission launches a social media campaign focusing on sustainable cultural tourism. With the sloganEurope’s Culture – close to you”, this campaign promotes the re-discovery of Europe’s diverse treasures, both natural and cultural. The aim is to encourage Europeans to discover the beauty and richness of destinations close to their homes, in a safe and sustainable way.

Europe’s culture – close to you features existing cultural offers – both physical and digital – supported by the EU and its partners. This can be winners of the European Heritage Awards, traditional and online exhibitions, protected natural sites, stunning architecture, music festivals etc. Moreover the campaign is backed up by digital resources that will make European holiday goers’ life easier, including the new Re-Open EU interactive map with detailed travel information about all EU Member States. The main hashtag is #EuropeForCulture, originally created for the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018.
